about

"The title Happy Mao refers to a trick you can do with a Chinese banknote," says Martin Lau, "you give it two folds down through Mao Zedongs portrait - one located down through each eye - which, depending on how you turn the banknote, makes the Chairman alternately seem to laugh and cry. The trick is today still seen as subversive in China and was chosen as the title for the project because of the clear picture it creates of the innocent against the totalitarian. "

The album was recorded in the spring of 2011.
